The first days of January in the province of Tungurahua in the city of Pillaro the famous “Diablada de Píllaro” is celebrated, an ancestral tradition where more than 1000 dancers expose their culture, folklore, gastronomy and much more.

All about the Diablada de Pillaro.

The Diablada de Pillaro originated as a rejection of Catholic traditions, physical and psychological abuse by the Spanish towards indigenous people and is celebrated the first days of the year and this celebration is considered as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador.

In this celebration there are 6 devils with handmade masks with long horns and teeth, these characters are the main actors in the dances and parades of this popular celebration.

From January 1 to 6

This celebration began in rejection of the Catholic holidays and the mistreatment by the Spanish towards the indigenous people.

It is celebrated in Píllaro, Province of Tungurahua.

Parades and comparsas are mainly held at the festival.
